Three Romances (1976, revised 1981), for flute and piano, about 10 minutes with pauses. An early work of which I am still fond, composed while studying at Western Michigan University. Three movements, slow (2:35) (score excerpt) - fast (2:38) (score excerpt) - moderate (3:56) (score excerpt), mysterious and intense, free atonality with occasional tonal suggestions; romantic, but without programs or titles. Fairly difficult, especially the fast 2nd movement; piano part very substantial. Available from the composer, $6. Nice recording available.

Two Floot Loops (1979), "Zeed" (a lullaby, about 2:45) (score excerpt) and "Letters Home" (a ballad, about 3:00) (score excerpt), for flute and piano. Jazzy, not too difficult. There are actually 5 Floot Loops, and there is hope that the publisher will put out the rest later. Five (1981), for brass quintet, about 10 minutes w/pauses. Five short, interrelated movements: "Introduction," theme 1 (1:10) (score excerpt); "Recitative," theme 2 (1:50) (score excerpt); "Tarantella-Humoresque," theme 1 (2:00) (score excerpt); "Lyric Palindrome," theme 2 (2:15) (score excerpt); "Rondo-Retrospective," themes 1 &2 (2:07) (score excerpt). Free atonality, octatonic scales used extensively. Alternate part for 1st trumpet in C provided. Difficult, but very cool. Total playing time about 11 minutes. Unisons (1981), for three flutes and piano, 5 minutes. (score excerpt) All players play simple parts on cymbals, and pianist also plays temple blocks; some flute passages are piccolo optional. Serialized; obsessed with issues of texture: flutes explore different ways and degrees of being in unison, while piano shifts between support and complete independence. Difficult; performance may be facilitated by using a conductor. In nice manuscript. $5, available directly from me. Recording available.

Propagatia (1989), for bass trombone and piano, about 3:10. (score excerpt) Turbulent, moody; most material derived from first measure of piano part. Difficult. Cripple Creek Counterpoint (1992), for flute quartet, about 3:30. (score excerpt) You get all this in 31/2 minutes: sections of unison, tutti, quasi-minimalism, and imitative polyphony. Good parts for all players. Moderate difficulty; improvisational ending. Named for a small stream of dubious purity that runs behind the Fine Arts Center. Cripple Creek Counterpoint (rev. 1995), for woodwind quintet. (score excerpt) An arrangement, with the composition of a new part for the bassoon, of the original version for flute quartet. Available from Frank Warren Music Service (W-063, $12.25); no recording of this version as yet.

Habanera Chromatique (1994), for oboe (or clarinet, or soprano sax) and marimba, 4:15. (score excerpt) Marimbist also plays (with mallets) on a mounted set of bongos; oboist also plays a small shaker. No 4-mallet playing. C minor, much chromaticism. Slow & rhythmic; oboe part includes lyrical phrases and ornate, shawm-like passages. Good encore number. Oboe part available arranged & transposed to Bb for clarinet or soprano sax (specify). $5, from composer. Recording available.
