Piano Music

Much of this music was written for my students when I was teaching piano (exception: Two by Four). Some things are in jazz or related styles; these are completely written out and require no improvisation (though enterprising players are encouraged to try). Some would be suitable for playing clubs or parties, or as encores.

Cosmic Encounters (1984)
Instruments: Piano
Duration: 2-4 minute pieces
Difficulty: Intermediate
Price: $12

"Twelve Interplanetary Etudes on the Intervals for Intermediate Terrestrial Piano." Each piece emphasizes one of the 12 chromatic intervals and is followed by a page of simple theory exercises concerned with that interval. The pieces follow the story of an imagined future manned spaceflight that retraces the path of the Voyager probes to Saturn ("Countdown," "Weightless," etc.). The intervals get larger as the distance from Earth increases, concluding with a landing on Saturn's giant moon Titan that emphasizes octaves but includes all 11 of the previous intervals. The book can be played through in about 30 minutes, and would make a nice recital with students reading the narrations in between pieces. This collection is a personal favorite, released in 2000 by Manduca Music Publications (#10124).
