Swing Shift (1997) 

Swing Shift uses a medium funk groove, with frequent kicks and interruptions, for the head sections; bridge sections are in straight ahead double time swing.  Swing 8th notes are constant throughout; the solo improv section also alternates between these two styles.  Generally, Guitars 1 & 2 play principal themes, Guitar 3 plays changes, reinforced by the bass, and Guitars 4 & 5 play counter melodic parts (Guitar 4 occasionally reinforces 1 & 2, and Guitar 5 occasionally reinforces 3).  Available from UNC Jazz Press here.
